Townsend is known as "The Peaceful Side
of the Smokies". This area offers more of a small town
feel. Townsend has established minimum acreage
lots giving guests alot of "elbow room".
While in Townsend, enjoy many things such
as biking, hiking, fishing, tubing, and great restaurants.
One of the jewels close to Townsend is Cades Cove with its
historic homes and mill. Just outside the
entrance to
Cades Cove is a great swimming area at the elbow
of the river. There is also a fun golf course in
Townsend called
Laurel Valley. During the year,
Townsend hosts many craft shows and festivals.
Smoky Mountains Travel Information:
Bicycling in the Smoky Mountains-
There is limited biking in the Smoky's due to the step and
narrow roadways. Bicycles are prohibited on the
trials. The look around Cades Cove is closed to
automobile traffic on Wednesday and Saturday until 10 a.m.

Horseback Riding in the Smoky
Mountains - You can rent horses from private stables all
around the Smoky Mountains. You are required to horse
back ride with a guide in most areas. Children under 6
years of age must ride with an adult. If you own
a horse, phone park HQ for more information at (865)
436-1200. There is one drive-in horse camp in Tennessee /
Smoky Mountains. Reservations are required and can be made
by calling (800) 365-CAMP.
Fishing in the Smoky Mountains -
There is great fishing in the Smoky's streams. These
streams include Abrams Creek below Cades Cove, Big Creek on
the south end of the park. You will find smallmouth
bass, rock bass, rainbow trout or brown trout and is allowed
from sun up until sun set. You must have a Tennessee or
North Carolina state fishing license.
